While serving as a RACE mentor can definitely be an enjoyable and memorable college experience, it is important to know the obligations and responsibilities of being a part of the RACE program. For this reason we have provided a checklist of things you should be aware of when applying to be a RACE mentor. After reviewing and checking these items, sign your name in the appropriate area below. By doing so, we know that you fully understand and are willing to accept the responsibilities of being a RACE mentor, if you are selected.

While serving as a RACE mentor can definitely be an enjoyable and memorable college experience, it is important to know the obligations and responsibilities of being a part of the RACE program. For this reason we have provided a checklist of things you should be aware of when applying to be a RACE mentor. After reviewing and checking these items, sign your name in the appropriate area below. By doing so, we know that you fully understand and are willing to accept the responsibilities of being a RACE mentor, if you are selected. I understand that my primary duty as a RACE mentor is to help my mentee(s) connect to the University by having a sincere interest in helping them achieve personal, social, and academic adjustment to the University. I understand that I am required to attend the Spring Mentor Meeting & Trainings in April, any summer meetings, and the Mentor Retreat in August. I understand that I must attend the monthly group meetings throughout the semester on the first Tuesday or Thursday of each month during Dead Hour or other designated time. I understand that I will need to be available for ALL RACE events (some events are held during evening hours) and will be there unless an unforeseen emergency arises or there is a class/work conflict, at which time I will give this information to the appropriate persons. I understand that I will be paid $10.00/hour for participating in RACE events during the semester, the Mentor Retreat, and Week of Welcome. Furthermore, I understand that I will NOT be paid for missed events. I understand that I will not be able to take over 17 hours of classes per semester, so that I can maintain a balanced schedule allowing for all of my RACE responsibilities to be met. I understand that I will have to attend an Interview to complete the Application Process. I understand that I must have 2 references: a faculty and/or staff. I have read and understand the job description and time commitment of being a RACE mentor.
Expectations

1. To do all that I can to help my mentees make a connection to Tech, because I know my responsibility does not end after the last day of Week of Welcome.

2. To respect the dignity of all persons.

3. To support my mentee(s) decision to seek membership in any student organization recognized by the university regardless of my individual beliefs and bias.

4. To strive to protect the physical and emotional health and safety of everyone involved in the RACE program.

5. To encourage the development of Tech pride and promote a positive attitude toward Tech and the RACE program.

6. To strive to better myself as a leader through my involvement with the RACE program.

7. To attend all RACE meetings, retreats and events on time and with a great attitude. I know other RACE mentors and my mentee(s) are depending on me. I will put the responsibilities of the program before the activities of other student organizations and extracurricular activities, when possible.

8. Not to use my position as a RACE mentor to further my personal agenda or gain swipes.

9. Not to pursue a romantic relationship with any member of the RACE mentee group.

10. To neither use nor support the use of illegal drugs; and, to neither misuse nor support the misuse of alcohol because I know that as a RACE mentor, I am a role model.

11. To make sure my mentees and I have fun!

By signing this, I realize that I will be held accountable to these expectations by the rest of the RACE mentors and advisors. If I fail to live up to these expectations, I realize that I may be asked to have my mentees transferred and no longer receive pay as a R.A.C.E. mentor.
